We humans have the incredible capability of constructing useless things and believing that some of them are not.

Heros

Nancy

I just passed this week at Nancy, on the ETR2005 (Loria's Real Time Summer School 2005).
I passed a great time there, learning during the day and having fun with other students during the night.

Many presentations were very interesting, but personnaly I specially apreciated Patrick Thiran on Network Calculus and Anton Cervin on delay and jitter effects over stability and control.

Some quotes:
  • "UML is like the horoscope, you will always find yourself on it."
  • "Do not shake me, I'm full of tears."
  • "For sure, you are the nearest one from yourself."

The start of the end

I think it will be spintronics before quantum computing and quantum computing before optronics.

Security

That seems a good point of view over security, some quotes:

"""
It is often easier to not do something dumb than it is to do something smart
"""

"""
My prediction is that the "Hacking is Cool" dumb idea will be a dead idea in the next 10 years. I'd like to fantasize that it will be replaced with its opposite idea, "Good Engineering is Cool" but so far there is no sign that's likely to happen.

God bless USA

"""
If nuclear power was used to the fullest practical extent in the United States, we would need about 300 power plants of the type now in use. The waste produced each year would then be enough to kill (300 x 50 million =) over 10 billion people. I have authored over 250 scientific papers over the past 35 years presenting tens of thousands of pieces of data, but that "over lO billion" number is the one most frequently quoted. Rarely quoted, however, are the other numbers given along with it: we produce enough chlorine gas each year to kill 400 trillion people, enough phosgene to kill 20 trillion, enough ammonia and hydrogen cyanide to kill 6 trillion with each, enough barium to kill 100 billion, and enough arsenic trioxide to kill 10 billion. All of these numbers are calculated, as for the radioactive waste, on the assumption that all of it gets into people. I hope these comparisons dissolve the fear that, in generating nuclear electricity, we are producing unprecedented quantities of toxic materials.

I do not know how much is a trillion (non scientific term), however I'm sure that is at least one hundred times the whole mankind. It would also be interesting to know if "we" is "the USA" or "the mankind", but anyway, this is the kind of things that makes me proud of my race (irony).

P2P TV

Companies wants to make us pay for TV + Phone + Internet, when indeed we only need Internet !

P2P TV is like viewing Divx videos, but streamed. You can look for instance at Pplive there are Chinese channels (with subtitles in Chinese), you can see Japanese animes with Chinese subtitles, or (not so legally) some English films with Chinese subtitles.

As you see, P2P TV is not only a new way to access video content, is also a great source for learning Chinese !

PPlive is only the top of the iceberg, there are plenty of similar projects that will appear in the next months/years. Some of them are actually solving technical issues and most of the other are blocked by legal issues (in USA and Europe it is not legal to rediffuse the TV signal).

Cable TV companies, start worrying...

Radio blog

I do not know if this is legal or not, but I found a source of plenty, plenty of music on internet !

Radio.blog has a search engine for radio.blogs that publish songs online. You can create your own radio blog with some easy steps (if you already know how to manage php webpages).

By now, I invite you to hear the song 'Cocorosie - Candy Land' here.

Of course you can also hear Joanna Newsom.

Energy

if all the devices becomes mobile, will they use our energy ?
Think about an iPod 'pico' with an internal pendulum (like the Seiko Kinetic)

Artist of the month

Declared artist of this month: Joanna Newsom

Her first long play The Milk Eyed Mender is simply something totally different from whatever you ever heard.

I invite you to see her on the BBC website.
