A few weeks ago I had the occasion to meet Michel Fliess in "one more meeting". However that day the notion "groundbreaking work" was redefined for me. I saw things that I would not believe. He is part of the INRIA research team named ALIEN, and yes, you can believe that his work seems from another planet.
For you control engineers reading this post (if any) know that nowadays research papers are published with titles like "Control without model" and "Non-linear estimation is easy".
And yes, the control without model can provide better results than control with model. For me this puts a big part of my academic learning directly into the "obsolete" area of the library.
To be fair, back at my university studies I had read some of his works when I studyied the "flatness control" method (which later on I got the chance to put in practice). This blasphemous affirmations are the result of a continuation of this approach.
